About Learning How to Properly Carry a Car Seat
Carrying a car seat incorrectly is the easiest way to injure your back as a new mother. Oh Baby! Fitness Senior Instructor Kathleen Donahoe demonstrates the best and safest way to carry a baby’s car seat.
As a new mom you’ll find that you are picking up that car seat again and again and again and it can really cause havoc on your lower back. Think about lower back entries is that it’s really hard to work out. So we want to keep your lower back safe so you’re able to come to class.
One thing to know though, rather than picking up that car seat again, and again it’s really helpful if you can just put the car seat in the stroller. That’s the easiest way to get that really heavy contraption often with heavy babies in it around town and protect your lower back.
If you do absolutely have to just carry the car seat though, I’m gonna show you a couple small adjustments you can make to protect your back. This is Casey and Maddox here. How old is Maddox? 5 months. And how much does he weigh? 19 pounds. So this is a heavy heavy car seat you’ve got going on here.
What happens Casey will show you the incorrect way to hold the car seat first and then we’ll move into the correct posture. You want to go ahead and pick that up. Hey Maddox. So if you see here, this is how a lot of moms carry their car seat with that hip jetted out put it on the side. This is causing a lot of stress and strain on her lower back. A more helpful way to carry is a little bit closer to your center. I think more like you’d carry a laundry basket right in the center of your body, get as close to your core as possible. You’re doing great. It’s a lot safer. She’s got a long lower back in this position to find. Does it feel better? It feels a lot better. That’s what you want.
